004- Joy Cuisine
I found out Joy Cuisine (兩草) in some foodie page and the food look so good in the picture, so I decided to have a try! I Brought my friends here before they fly back to Canada, due to the corona virus they have to get back earlier than what they’ve planned and their flight ticket is double to triple the price. Therefore we have to get some local food to save some memory of Hong Kong food scene and something less pricey!
Joy Cuisine in Tin Hau is freaking down to earth, very local street food mode, like a food stall. Nothing in the menu is more than $40, damn in Hong Kong island that is cheap. The menu is small but concentrate, like everything on the menu is their signature you won’t go wrong with any of your pick! Straight to your face, you know what’s the deal.
We ordered kaya toast and fried rice noodle roll to start, snack size good to share with friends! I will order it again when I visit! Kaya toast is crunchy the kaya is not too sweet thin layer but just enough, the coconut flavor is mild, sandwich with thin layer of butter! One of the best kaya toast in Hong Kong. Their kaya jam is in natural color, you know people will put some artifical color in kaya make it green, I always find that weird why coconut is green? Does it even looks appetizing to you when the kaya is alien neon green? The fried rice noodle roll is like a soy sauce fired noodle roll, when they brought it up to our table already looks yum, the color is on point and they smell good! I think they fried it with pork oil, so they are extra yum! Pork oil in asian cuisine is like butter in western cuisine, I don’t know why people think pork oil is gross but butter is delicious, animal fat are extra flavor!
Then we have bak kut teh with soup dumplings and fried lard hot spring egg with rice. OMG their bak kut teh blows my mind! I never liked any bak kut teh, I have never been to Singapore, so I have never had any traditional bak kut teh. But the one in Hong Kong claims they are traditional, taste like mild Chinese medicine soup to me. I never though bak out teh could be good until I have this one in Joy Cuisine. Bak kut teh in Joy Cuisine is strong in flavor very rich meaty with a herbal sense also peppery, but is good you won’t think you are drinking Chinese medicine! That’s a new definition to me to define bak kut teh!
The only pitty thing to pick on is their fried lard, their fried lard is not on point. The fried lard hot spring egg with rice looks awesome, egg, rice and soy sauce nice combination my favorite combo, they are all on point but the fried lard is not what I am looking for! Because Joy Cuisine is also famous for their fried lard, so I am quite looking forward for that! But is a little bit disappointed they are dense, not very crunchy is like a hard crisp. Their is a restaurant in Yuen Long selling fired lard doggie’s noodle, their lard is the best lard I ever had! Crunchy but not oily their lard is very special, their crunchiness can’t compare to any chips or rice crisp! So I am a little disappointed to Joy Cuisine’s fried lard, but I will still go back for their kaya toast and their bak kut teh!!!!!! But don’t order drinks in Joy Cuisine , save your money for better coffee some where in cha chaan teng!
